Last Oak Felled In City Park

City workers (from left) Robert Walker, Brandon Richardson, Mike Scroggins, and Andy Hall look over the tree that burst open when it hit the ground.

The pulpy interior of the tree was filled with insects.

The last of what were believed to be the original oak trees in City Park was felled last Friday by city workers. The tree, estimated at around 150 years old, was hollow and considered a danger to park goers. Before the 1984 tornado, the park was shaded by a number of oaks that were planted in the 1870s, it is believed.
