Friday Fundraiser Culminates Efforts To Roll Out Cancer

WATER VALLEY – The annual Relay for Life will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday night, April 26, in the Crawford Sports Complex with the survivors’ dinner.
The public events at this year’s Relay start at 6 p.m. with the opening ceremony, followed by the survivors’ lap. All local survivors are encouraged to come out and enjoy the dinner and participate in the survivors’ lap.
There will be live entertainment during the evening and at 9 p.m. the luminaria ceremony will start, followed by the sky lantern ceremony.
This year 11 teams have coordinated activities to raise funds during the night. Eight teams will offer delicious, mouth-watering campsite goodies including:
Mission Possible, egg rolls, lemonade and sliced sweet treats;
Dynamic Conquerors, Polish sausage, pulled pork sandwiches, coffee and assorted drinks;
Walkers for a Cure, smoked sausage, hog dogs and chips;
Bayson Chapel: Praying for a Cure, chili dogs, pulled pork and nachos;
Plowing Over Cancer, crawfish, corn on the cob and potatoes, sold by the pound;
Sylva Rena Baptist Church, popcorn and tea;
Everdale M.B. Church, nachos and cheese, chips, miniature desserts and water; and
Coffeeville School District, funnel cakes.
The teams will also have other fundraising activities including kids’ activities, raffles, cookbooks and silent auctions.

4:30 p.m. – Games and activities sponsored by the Water Valley High School Beta Club and Water Valley Junior Auxiliary.
5: p.m. – Survivors Registration and Dinner, Prayer by Binnie Turnage, and entertainment with the Coleman Family.
6 p.m. – Opening ceremonies with welcome by Mayor Larry Hart, Recognitions by committee members, opening prayer by Pastor Amos Sims, National Anthem by Carol Alexander and raising of the American Flag by Water Valley Boy Scouts Troop #14.
6:30 p.m. – First lap of Relay with the survivors’ lap and reading of survivors’ names; Watermelon Queen 2012 Shanique Wesley presents medals; Watermelon Queen 2013 Carrie Lamar Carlisle presents medals; and the second lap for family members and caregivers of cancer survivors.
7 p.m. – Entertainment with Valley Dance Company, Betty Hart and Bayson Chapel M.B. Church Angel Choir;
8 p.m. – Entertainment with Janet Telford, Jessie Higdon and poem recitations by Shanique Wesley.
9 p.m. – Luminaria Ceremony with prayer by Travis Clement and reading of the names by Bobby Murphree.
9:30 p.m. – Sky Lantern Ceremony
10:00 p.m. – Silent Auction ends, Womanless Beauty Pageant.
11:00 p.m. – Entertainment with Tanner Mills followed by Javier and Shan Carrasco.
Midnight – Announcement of winners by team captains, presentation of Awards and closing remarks by Ethel Morgan and Amy McMinn.
