WATER VALLEY–Eighteen senior journalism students from Ole Miss completed a weekend reporting blitz in Water Valley as part of their class project.
Each student was assigned a person to interview and photograph during the project, which got underway on March 20 and continued on March 21 and 22. The students were working under the direction  of Dr. Mark Dolan, Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi.
The people selected for interviews ranged from long-time Water Valley residents to newcomers and new business owners.
Each year a different town and newspaper is selected as part of the class project, and in past years students have been to Tupelo, Greenwood, Brookhaven, McComb, Madison, Cleveland, Leland, Vicksburg and Hernando to write stories that are published in each town’s newspaper.
“The idea is to assist local newspapers and to get bylines and valuable live experience for our students,” Dolan said about the project. “Real reporting for real newspapers away from the campus is the best instruction our students can get. It’s very hard to duplicate this in the classroom,” he added.
Dolan recently moved to Water Valley and lives on North Main Street.
