Funny Money Tops Crime Report

WATER VALLEY – A pair of bogus $100 bills, a stolen purse and a shattered door top the criminal activity in the City of Water Valley in recent weeks.
Police Chief Mike King reported Dollar General and Sonic each reported a fake $100 bill on Nov. 14. A diligent clerk at Dollar General became suspicious after examining the bill, which King described as prop money available online for motion picture use. The person who attempted to pass the bill, walked out of the store before police arrived but allegedly shoplifted an item. King said a similar bill was accepted at Sonic Drive-In and reported to authorities.
King said the prop money looks real, but is marked “For Motion Picture Use Only.” The case remains under investigation. He also reminded Water Valley residents and businesses about the usual uptick of scams during the holiday season.
“From counterfeit money to telephone and email scams, everybody needs to be wary,” King said.
On Nov. 19 King said the door of Subway on South Main Street was shattered after someone hit the door with an object in an apparent break-in attempt. King said the entry was unsuccessful.
On Nov. 27, police investigated an automobile burglary after a purse and other items were reported stolen from a parked vehicle on Wood Street. King said it appeared the vehicle was unlocked. His department has a person of interest in the case.
