Deputies Make Multiple Arrests During Holidays

WATER VALLEY – A repeat DUI offender faces a long list of charges following an automobile accident on Saturday, Jan. 2. Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported Skyzic Haire, 30, was charged with felony DUI, child endangerment, simple assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, failure to comply, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and driving on the wrong side of the road.

“Thankfully the child in the vehicle did not sustain serious injuries,” Humphreys told the Herald.  “Haire was already under indictment for a felony DUI last year and he has numerous earlier DUI charges. Hopefully we can keep him incarcerated this time,” Humphreys added. 

The accident occurred on Hwy. 32, near Long Branch Bridge, when Haire lost control of his vehicle and it slid down a steep embankment.

Among Haire’s earlier DUI charges include an arrest last May after he was involved in a crash with a Herald employee on Wise Street in Water Valley. Haire fled the scene of that accident but was arrested within minutes. He was also arrested in Panola County in 2015 for public drunk and other driving-related charges.

In other law enforcement news:

• Humphreys said an alert deputy linked two suspects to a burglary of an unoccupied house on Hwy. 330 in Tillatoba on New Year’s Eve. Bobby Atkins, 42, and Scarlet Campbell were taken into custody shortly after deputy Thomas West saw them leave the residence.

“It was an older home that is primarily used for storage, deputy West knew the home had been targeted before and became suspicious when he observed activity at the residence,” Humphreys said.

West initially stopped Atkins and Campbell after they left the house and recorded their information. Then he went back to the home and discovered it had been broken into and the contents were rummaged through. Deputies were able to catch back up with the pair on I-55 and were given consent to search their vehicle. Deputies found a jewelry box along with tools and gloves consistent with burglary tools. Both were transported to the Yalobusha County Jail.

Atkins was charged with burglary, petit larceny and possession of burglary tools and remains in custody at the jail. Humphreys reported he was already out on bond for an earlier grand larceny charge after allegedly stealing a motor vehicle in Oakland. 

Campbell was charged with assessory after the fact-burglary and petit larceny. She has posted bond and was released from custody.

• On Sunday, Jan. 3, Angela Troy, 39, was arrested following a traffic stop on Hwy. 32 near the Yalobusha County Jail. She was initially charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended (driver’s license) and careless driving. Following a body search at the jail, deputies also uncovered a bag or marijuana, a syringe and several Alprazolam pills. She was then charged with possession with intent (Alprazolam) and introduction of contraband into a correction facility. She remains in custody.

Humphreys also said multiple arrests were made in a New Year’s Eve driver’s safety checkpoint, including:

• Sarina Gray was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Willie James Price was charged with DUI, other substance.

• Tavarious Jones was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Perry Marion was charged with DUI by troopers also working the checkpoint.

• Hunter Wages was cited for no seatbelt.

• Courtney White was cited with two counts of no child restraint and expired tag.

• Reba Hood was cited for expired tag.
