Yalobusha Voters Pick Trump, Clinton

WATER VALLEY – The Yalobusha County vote mirrored statewide results last Tuesday as Donald Trump (1030 votes) won the Republican primary and Hillary Clinton (1,220 votes) won the Democratic primary for Mississippi. Trump received 54 percent of the Republican vote in the county, while Clinton earned 84 percent of the county’s Democratic vote.
The vote tally reflected a 37.5 percent voter turnout in the March 8 primary, which is above average according to Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney. Of that amount, almost 57 percent of the voters participating cast their ballot on the Republican ticket.
Republican candidate Ted Cruz received 32 percent of the votes (613), trailed by John Kasich with six percent of the county’s vote (116). The final Republican candidate remaining in the race, Marco Rubio, received four percent of the vote (70).
On the Democratic ticket, Bernie Sanders received 15 percent of the vote in the county.
The Presidential election will be held on November 3, a ballot that will also include the county’s five election commissioners elected from each supervisor district. Election commissioners are non-partisan and the deadline to qualify is June 6.
