WATER VALLEY – Water Valley High School senior Ally Avant has been awarded the 2016 Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete scholarship from the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA), marking the first time a Blue Devil student has earned the honor.

Avant is among 16 students selected statewide who will receive the $1,500 scholarship after a selection committee selected the winners from a pool of nearly 300 nominations. Each year the scholarships are awarded to one male and one female scholar-athlete from each of the eight MHSAA geographical districts.

“I am extremely honored to receive this scholarship, especially because I think there has been a lot of negative publicity for the school lately,” Avant told the Herald.  “This is definitely something that shows not only how hard the students work, but also the teachers as well. There are a lot of deserving students and teachers at our schools.”

Avant was first nominated by school for the scholarship and then submitted an application that included a letter of recommendation from a coach, a letter of recommendation from a teacher and an essay. During high school, she has played softball, basketball, cheer and cross-country and maintains a GPA of a little over 4.0, as advanced classes at the high school carry extra weight in the grading. Avant plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall and will major in Political Science.

The 16 recipients will be recognized on Monday, April 4, at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson at the 21st annual banquet.
