COFFEEVILLE – A 58 year-old Coffeeville man was killed last Tuesday, April 26, when he was struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 330 in what authorities are calling an accident. Coroner Ronnie Stark reported Macon Taylor, Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene, citing the cause of death as blunt force trauma from the impact. Coffeeville Police Chief Mark Martin said his department is investigating the incident and does not suspect foul play.
“The driver of the vehicle called and reported he had struck something in the road, but he was not sure what he had hit,” Martin told the Herald. The driver and another person initially searched the area as police responded and were unable to find anything. Martin said his officer found a hat the victim was wearing and then discovered Macon in tall grass. Martin also said the vehicle sustained a substantial amount of damage on the fender.
An ambulance was dispatched and paramedics worked to resuscitate Macon, but were unsuccessful. The police chief said the victim stepped in front of the vehicle as the driver was slowing for the intersection. Martin said the driver did not appear to be speeding, was not under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and was in his lane when the impact occurred. A toxicology sample from the victim was sent to the crime lab, according to Stark.
“This was a very traumatic experience for the driver of the vehicle,” Martin said.
