Adult Squabble Leads To Gunplay At Senior Party

WATER VALLEY – A senior party Saturday night turned violent after nearby adults got into a heated argument that culminated with gunplay and one person injured. Water Valley Police Chief Mike King reported Jamie Cooper was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly shooting multiple times at the victim during a scuffle on Grandview Drive near the party.
Citing multiple witnesses, the narrative in the case report completed by responding officers stated Cooper stopped her vehicle on Grandview Drive and exited with a pistol as Angel Green approached. One witness reported Cooper pointed the pistol at Green and fired a shot over her head. Next Green put her hands on Cooper, who fired another shot before the ladies scuffled on the ground and five or six more shots were fired. Cooper then left the scene in her vehicle, according to the report.
Shortly afterwards Cooper was taken into custody without incident at her residence on Boyd Street. After an interview she was charged and later released on a $3,000 bond.
Green was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford where she was treated for a head injury, according to King. The chief also said the initial call to authorities indicated the victim had been shot in the head, but the actual cause of the injury appeared to be blunt force trauma.
According to the case report, an officer had already visited the residence earlier that night following a complaint call at the party where an estimated 100 people were gathered including teenagers and adults.
Other law enforcement news reported in Water Valley includes:
• Officers investigated a forgery case after two bogus payroll checks were cashed at a local business. The checks were reported to be payroll checks for Dollar General employees, but King said they were fraudulent. The case remains under investigation.
• Sonya Gray faces a barrage of charges after she was arrested twice in an eight-day period. On April 20, Gray was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under suspension, DUI –first offense, careless driving and no proof of liability insurance after she allegedly crashed into a ditch on Stephens Street and fleeing on foot. She was apprehended and arrested following an investigation that included a report from a witness who observed Gray exit the vehicle. Gray was booked in the Yalobusha County Jail and released the following day due to medical problems not related to the incident.
On April 28, Gray was again arrested after officers responded to a disturbance on Central Street. According to the case report, Gray was tearing up a job site and assaulted her husband at the residence where construction was underway before fleeing the scene. An officer reported that he discovered Gray on Lafayette Street outside her vehicle hiding behind a tree. After a scuffle, Gray was placed in the back of the patrol car where she damaged the cruiser’s rear window and door. She was then transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford where she fled from the emergency room and was picked up by Oxford police. After she was treated, she was booked in the Yalobusha County Jail. She was charged with felony domestic assault, destroying public property and disorderly conduct for the altercation. She was also charged with DUI-first offense, reckless driving and driving under suspension for leaving the construction site and driving through several yards before she was apprehended on Lafayette Street. She also faces a malicious mischief charge for damaging an individual’s property.
•Officers arrested Jerome Jenkins for possession of marijuana with intent to sell or distribute, DUI-first offense and no proof of liability insurance. The charges stem from a traffic stop on Martin Street on April 30 after officers received a tip about suspicious activity.
The officer noted in the case report that alcohol could be detected on Jenkins’ breath and marijuana residue was visible in the vehicle. During a search the officer discovered 10 small plastic bags filled with green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the trunk.
Jenkins was released on a $4,008.50 bond.
• Investigated a report of a stolen 2015 Nissan Altima on North Main Street on April 28 that culminated with the arrest of Chris Roper for auto theft. According to the case report, the owner of the vehicle identified Roper as the suspect. The vehicle was entered into the NCIC and Roper was apprehended in Panola County the next day after he was stopped at a driver’s license checkpoint. Roper was transported to the Water Valley Police Department where he was charged. Panola authorities also requested a hold be placed on Roper for questioning after a search of the vehicle revealed possible methamphetamine.
• Tracy Radford Allen was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, no drivers license, DUI-second offense and no proof of liability insurance after he stopped at a driver’s license checkpoint on North Main Street on April 30.
• Officers investigated a report of a stolen four-wheeler on Haynes Street on May 6. The 2008 Yamaha Raptor 80 was valued at $1,355. The case remains under investigation.
