Mississippi Dizzy Dean Tournament Starts Thursday At Crawford Sports Complex

WATER VALLEY  – The Mississippi Dizzy Dean seven year-old state baseball tournament gets underway at the Crawford Sports Complex Thursday and continues through Saturday as players from 10 north Mississippi towns and cities will compete in the state tournament, according to Park Director Jacob Edwards. 

Edwards told the Herald that the Dizzy Dean State tournament is part of increased usage at the sports complex as he works to attract more events.

“When we bring people to town it is a money maker for the city, for Magnolia Youth League and great exposure to our park,” Edwards said about the increased traffic that includes parents and family members that accompany the players. Edwards estimated almost 700 people attended the last weekend’s tournament at the complex.

But the Dizzy Dean state tournament scheduled this weekend is likely a first at the Water Valley fields and Edwards explained Dizzy Dean changed the bid process to allow smaller communities an opportunity to host the tournaments. Edwards also said Magnolia Youth League has designed t-shirts to sell at the tournament at a cost of $15 each, as a fundraiser for the youth league. 

“I invite everyone to come out and enjoy the great baseball action. We will have delicious food at the concession stands and we will turn on the sprinklers for the kids to cool off, it’s fun for the entire family,” Edwards added.

In addition to Water Valley’s seven year-old team, competing teams in the tournament will travel from Clarksdale, Sena-tobia, Saltillo, Hernando, Grenada, Southaven, Horn Lake, Batesville and Greenwood.
