Deputies Make Weekend Arrests

WATER VALLEY – Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported multiple drug arrests were made by deputies over the weekend. The action actually started last Thursday when Tim Logan and Johanna Logan were arrested for possession of methamphetamine at the Gum’s Crossing restroom on County Road 221 outside of Coffeeville.

Deputy Thomas West reported the arrests were made with the assistance of Calhoun deputy Kenneth White and his K9 partner “Rico.” The pair were called in after the couple would not consent to a search of their vehicle. A search warrant was obtained after the dog indicated narcotics in the vehicle. Tim Logan also had an arrest warrant out of Grenada County and Johanna Logan had arrest warrants from Yalobusha County.

On Friday, Sept. 9, William Polk was arrested after a brief pursuit on County Road 154 near Tillatoba. 

“We attempted to stop his vehicle for a switched tag,” Humphreys explained. Polk was charged with switched tag, no driver’s license, expired tag, failure to stop, reckless driving, no seatbelt, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine and no proof of insurance.

Ironically the next arrest was made during the incident with Polk. West said a motorist passing on County Road 154 rolled down the window and asked if officers needed assistance.

“The driver appeared to be impaired so I directed her to pull over so I could check her driver’s license,” West explained. Teresa Gale Smith was charged with two counts of possession of a schedule 4 controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and DUI – other substance. The passenger in the vehicle, Glen “Booger” Smith was charged with disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

On Sept. 11, four people were arrested at a safety checkpoint on North Main Street near County Road 110. Kadejah Martin was charged with driving with a suspended license and possession of  drug paraphernalia.  Cassity Kendall, Dariius Morgan and Shakindra Henderson were each charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kimberly Jones was also arrested on Sept. 11 after she fled from a safety checkpoint on Hwy. 7 near Coffeeville. The pursuit led deputies into Grenada County down Hwy. 51. Jones was charged with no driver’s license, failure to comply, resisting arrest, reckless driving, speeding 105-55, driving on the wrong side of the road, improper passing and failure to stop. 

On Sept. 11, Joshua Turner was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after deputies were called to a residence for a disturbance. 

Humphreys said the weekend arrests are part of the never-ending struggle to curtail illegal narcotics in the county. He also said West will shift from a road deputy to a narcotics officer in October.

“This will be the first time our department will be able to have a deputy dedicated as a drug officer and I have no doubt the number of drug arrests will increase,” the sheriff added. The change comes after supervisors increased funding to the sheriff’s department for the coming fiscal year, which starts October 1, to hire another deputy. 

“I would like to thank the supervisors, I know it was tough to find the money in an already tight budget year,” Humphreys said.
