WATER VALLEY – Police Chief A. J. Hernandez reported his department is operating with a full force following recent hirings. The department has 11 full-time officers employed counting the chief. Hernandez said one officer is currently attending the police academy and all other officers are already certified law enforcement officers.
Hernandez was promoted to chief last June following the retirement of Mike King. Earlier in the month he attended the week long annual training required for new police chiefs in the state in Jackson. Hernandez reported the training covered a variety of topics including ethics laws, leadership and management, FBI training and support, Mississippi crime lab services, statewide crime reports, policies and procedures development and implementation, domestic violence and shelter projection, records management, budgets, FLSA, arrest and release rules – Mississippi Rules of Criminal Court, civil issues, the impact of social media on policing and standards and training accreditation.
“The training provided a broader vision of what my role is as a chief,” Hernandez reported. He also said the training provided valuable networking with other new police chiefs across the state including several from neighboring counties.

Jan. 1 – 19
• Responded to a report of domestic assault/simple at 300 Wood Street on Jan. 1. No arrest was made.
• Worked a two-car accident on Eckford Street on Jan. 1. One driver was cited for driving with a suspended license.
• Made a misdemeanor arrest for possession of marijuana on Wagner Street on Jan. 2. The defendant was also cited for traffic violations.
• Worked a vehicle accident on Jan. 3.
• Worked a vehicle accident on Hwy. 32 east on Jan. 4.
• Made an arrest for domestic violence at 101 Prospect Drive on Jan. 4.
• Worked a vehicle accident in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Jan. 4.
• Responded to a report of disorderly conduct at the Manor Apartments.
• Made an arrest for DUI- other, first offense at the intersection of Main Street and Blount Street on Jan. 5.
• Made an arrest for possession of marijuana on Jan. 6 on Frostland Drive.
• Investigated a report of armed robbery where money was taken on Buena Vista Drive on Jan. 6. No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation.
• Responded to a vehicle fire on Dogwood Lane on Jan. 6.
• Took a report of disturbing the peace at near the intersection of North Court and Central Street on Jan. 6.
• Responded to a report of domestic violence at Suratt Circle on Jan. 7. No arrest was made.
• Worked a grand larceny on McLarty Circle on Jan. 7 after a homemade trailer was reported stolen.
• Worked a vehicle accident and leaving the scene of an accident on Central Street on Jan. 8.
• Took a report of trespassing and larceny at Rolling Hills on Jan. 8.
• Took a report of telephone harassment on Jan. 9.
• Worked a vehicle accident in at the intersection of Church and Main Street.
• Received marijuana and paraphernalia that was turned in to officers on Jan. 9. The items had likely been discarded and picked up by a good Samaritan.
• Took a report of felony malicious mischief at Rolling Hills on Jan. 10. One person was charged by affidavit.
• Worked a vehicle accident on Hwy. 7 on Jan. 10.
• Made an arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia on Calhoun Street on Jan. 11.
• Took a report of disturbing the peace at Berkshire Apartments on Jan. 14.
• Made an arrest for contempt of court on Jan. 15.
• Worked a weather related vehicle accident on Hwy. 315 on Jan. 16.
• Worked a weather related vehicle accident on Martin Street on Jan. 16.
• Took a report of cyber stalking on Jan. 18.
• Issued 20 traffic citations from Jan 1 – 19.
