Hello everyone, it’s Son Jim filling in again for mother. Not a lot new to report this week. The doctors have changed some of her treatments again, and it seems to be helping with her strength issues. She’s also doing regular strength rehabilitation with a series of visiting nurses, and that also seems to be helping. Some days are better than others, as is so common in a long cancer journey.
Your continued thoughts, prayers, and communication are always much appreciated. At this point she’s been away from Main Street for over a year now, and I know it just doesn’t feel the same without Mrs. Betty in her place doing her regular series of jobs.
Mother also asked that I share the following story, which we found in the Sam Hollomon collection of materials I mentioned in the column last week.
It seems an old barn cat passed away after a long and successful life as a champion mouser. The cat got to the pearly gates, where she was met by the good Lord, who said, “anything you desire to make your stay in Heaven even more perfect, I can make it happen. The cat thought for a minute, then said, “well, I spent my entire life sleeping in a drafty old barn on a cold floor. I’d love to have a warm, fluffy pillow to sleep on,” and the Lord said, “it is done!”
A few weeks later a group of mice died and also found themselves standing at the pearly gates. Again, they were met by the Lord and asked the same question: “What can I do to make your stay in Heaven even more perfect?” The mice replied, “we have spent our entire life running from cats, dogs, and other animals. We’re so tired, and we’d love to all have roller skates to make it easier for us to get around.” Again, the Lord said, “it is done!”
Some time passed, and the Lord thought he would check in on the old barn cat and see how she was making out in Heaven. He asked the cat if Heaven was everything she hoped it would be, and she replied, “even better!” She said, “this pillow is so warm and comfortable, but I never expected there’d be regular Meals on Wheels deliveries. They taste fantastic!”
