The past weekend here in the northern hills was absolutely beautiful, weather-wise. Our little part of the natural world gave us its best. The atmosphere was made even more joyous by the Ole Miss win over Auburn.

Any good cheer over that victory came to a horrific end last Saturday night, though, when a young Ole Miss student was killed in the parking lot behind City Hall in Oxford. His girlfriend was severely injured, as well. Presumably, he was run over by a kid from Tennessee who, as of this writing, is still on the lam.
My family and I spent the weekend in Oxford at a house right off the square. That house’s yard is in the background of the released surveillance footage of the suspect in the parking lot. The young Ole Miss student was killed mere feet from where my children were sleeping, the oldest child of which had just been dropped off by friends from a night out at the movies just a couple hours before.
I know bad stuff can happen anywhere, but the closer we keep our kids to Water Valley for general run-of-the-mill weekend fun, the better. Oxford is a safe place but it can get pretty wild and it probably needs to chill out and check itself for a bit.
So that being said, for at least the duration of my children’s high school careers, anybody want to open a movie theater here in Water Valley? Just a small one will do! All you need is a scary movie and a comedy! Every kid from Water Valley High School and Oxford High School went to see the new “Halloween” movie on Saturday night. They could all be buying $12 popcorn buckets large enough to bathe in and giant $10 Coca-Colas in Water Valley!
The Lafayette High School kids didn’t go see the Halloween movie Saturday because they were all busy getting primped up for their school’s homecoming dance. There’s another way to keep our kids here. School dances. Maybe Water Valley High School can host a homecoming dance in the gym or at the Hendricks Building. A school-hosted Christmas formal could be fun?
And longtime readers already know how I feel about our town’s need for a public swimming pool and/or Splash pad. I’m honestly just throwing out ideas to keep our kids out of Oxford parking lots.
Speaking of supporting our local kids’ interests and activities right here in our town, the WVHS Blue Devil baseball team is in the middle of the annual
Boston Butt Baseball Fundraiser! Yes, I may be very biased, but this is the best of all the fundraisers. It’s the fundraiser where I don’t feel even the slightest bit of guilt when asking someone to support it because I know am doing them and their family a true favor by offering them the opportunity to purchase such a delicious Boston Butt! The barbecue is hot off the smoker, all fully cooked and ready to go!
So, support our kids by finding yourself a Blue Devil baseball player or Coach Camp and handing them $35. Then, when the barbecue is ready, spend the weekend eating pork sandwiches with the kids right here in ol’ Water Valley.
