Police Investigate Thursday Homicide

The Water Valley Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting on Stephens Street Thursday night.

Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Stephens Street at 11:26 p.m. The chief said that responding officers found the victim inside the house deceased.

Yalobusha County Coroner Ronnie Stark reported Jarion Jones, age 20, was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gun shot wounds. Jones was a 2022 graduate of Water Valley High School.

Chief Mangrum told the Herald a person of interest has been identified but there have been no arrests.

“This is still an open, active investigation,” Mangrum said early Friday afternoon. “We are still talking to potential witnesses who may have relevant info. We are still working to determine a motive, but we do believe it was an isolated incident.”

Yalobusha County deputies were on the scene within minutes to assist and back up Water Valley officers.
“We appreciate their assistance,” Mangrum said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) investigators and crime scene unit also responded to assist with the investigation.

Mangrum said the scene was cleared around 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Stark told the Herald that an autopsy is scheduled Monday.
