Welcome back to the inside scoop at Water Valley High, where last week we saw a lot less Blue and White and a lot more pink, red, and white! Students enjoyed this heartfelt week packed with love and thoughtful gifts and are now steadily counting down the days til spring break. With a three-day weekend, students were excited.
To kick off the flower-filled festivities, the Student Council members began decorating throughout the week to ensure the upcoming Valentine’s dance would be a success. They set aside their personal time so they could flourish the room with ravishing designs and decor. The 7th-10th grade students had a wonderful Wednesday, as the majority of the students spent their time on the dance floor, showing off their hottest moves at the Valentine’s Day dance from 6-8 p.m.
This dance was held locally at the Fountain Square Event Plaza and was sponsored by the Water Valley Junior Auxiliary. Student council members of Water Valley High host it. This dance is a new tradition, with last year being the very first time it was held.
It was such a big hit and the student council members decided to host this dance again and it was better than last year. This time around, the dance attracted more than 100 ticket sales, creating a room filled with dancing students, a booming DJ, heart-shaped pizzas, refreshing drinks, lovely decorations, and some of the best vibes!
Although this dance was catering to the seventh through 10th grade students, there were school faculty, student council members, and even older members of the community who made an appearance. Although the Junior Auxiliary sponsors this dance, all funds are gifted to the student council to help with future projects. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this fun experience possible!
In Honor of Black History Month, Coach Bernadette Sayles instructed her Geography class to make projects relating to historic trailblazing legends. These classes even went as far as to host a gallery walk for the entire school to view. Students loaded their poster boards with interesting facts about people such as abolitionist Sojourner Truth, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, tennis player and golfer Althea Gibson, scientist George Washington Carver and many more! Good job to each class as they each shared knowledgeable information amongst the school.
The younger students at Water Valley High are on a roll! Numerous junior high students competed in a math competition at the school level to earn a chance to advance to the regional competition. Jr. High students Jonah Ware, Braxton Ferguson, Liam Olson, and Timothy Story were strategically selected to compete in the 2024 Northwest Community College Regional Math Competition. In this competition, student will compete against surrounding schools in different math categories to hopefully advance to the next round. Congratulations to these young math geniuses!
Softball season is back in the Valley! This past Thursday, the junior varsity and varsity teams had their first home game of the season. They took on the J.Z. George Jaguars, and the Blue Devils did not disappoint! It’s safe to say it was a big success and a great way to enter into their season with a home-game win!
Head Coach Brad Wren notes, “The only thing better than a slugfest to open the season is WINNING a slugfest to open the season!”
The Varsity team ended their night victorious with a final score of 31-21. Be sure to watch the Lady Devils as they will be back in action on Friday, February 23, against the Winona Tigers. Junior varsity is swinging off at five and varsity at six!
All in all, it was an eventful week inside the Blue and White. With spring break approaching, the hopeful atmosphere inside the halls is slowly rising, as many students and staff are patiently waiting for a refreshing break. Continue in this journey with weekly updates on the frantic activities at Water Valley High each week in the Herald!
