If you were at last year’s Watermelon Carnival Street Dance, you already know the truth: once just wasn’t enough.
By popular demand (and we mean demand), Joe Austin and The Tallahatchies and Doctor Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster are headed back to the stage on Friday night, August 1, ready to turn Central Street by City Park into one huge dance floor.
Joe Austin and The Tallahatchies kick off the evening at 6:15 p.m., and if you’ve ever heard them live, you know this isn’t just music—it’s Mississippi storytelling set to a beat. Joe, raised on the blues-soaked backroads of Pontotoc, brings the soul, while guitarist Brian Sherwood (straight from the Delta), drummer Jon Harrison (Memphis born and rhythm-bred), and bassist Wesley Graham (a North Carolina native with a southern groove) bring the rest.
But don’t even think about heading home after that, because when Doctor Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster hits the stage at 7:30 p.m., the party kicks into high gear. Sequins? Check. Really big hair? You’ve got it. Moves you haven’t seen since prom night? Absolutely. A playlist that jumps from disco to rock to who-knows-what with zero shame and complete fun? You better believe it.
And just when you think it’s over—bam!—they’re back on stage after the fireworks at 9 p.m., because one funky set is never enough when Doctor Zarr’s involved.
These guys have been bringing down the house for over 20 years, from big-time corporate events to festivals on the beach, and now, once again, they’re bringing their high-voltage fun to Water Valley. Whether you’re six or 60 whether you plan to dance or just sit back and take it all in, this is the kind of night that makes the Carnival feel like magic. Doctor Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster is also known their colorful costumes and enthusiastic crowd participation.
So grab a lawn chair, lace up your dancing shoes (or just bring your best toe-tap), and meet us on Central Street. The stage will be set-up, the music will be loud, and the memories? They’re yours for the making.
