Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! It’s the first day of school, and excitement is in the air. Students are finding their classes, meeting their teachers, and settling into what’s sure to be a great year.
Walking into the building for my last first day as a senior was surreal. Every kid dreams of that moment heading into senior year—I just can’t believe it’s finally here! I want to wish all Water Valley High School students good luck this year. I hope you enjoy every little moment.
The senior class kicked off the year with a special breakfast at the BTC. It was a great time to talk, laugh, and bond as a class. Everyone came dressed in matching jerseys and T-shirts, and it really felt like the start of something big.
There are exciting changes at Water Valley High School this year. One new program is the introduction of Blue Bucks as part of PBIS, which is a positive behavior incentive program for students. The program encourages students to be safe, respectful, and responsible by rewarding positive behavior.
We’re also welcoming several new teachers and a new school counselor. Mrs. Chantel Chandler has joined us as our new counselor. New junior high teachers include Anthony Williams, Leon Harris, Cully Griffin, and Erica Camp.
Mr. Griffin shared a bit about himself: “I’m a first-year teacher. My parents were both teachers. I recently got married this past fall to my beautiful wife. I’m looking forward to having a great baseball year and school year and getting better as a teacher and coach. Working with Coach Ross and Dr. Person—I feel like it will be awesome. I think this will be a good year for me!”
Mrs. Camp also introduced herself: “My name is Erica Camp. To most, I’m known as ‘Coach Camp’s wife!’ I’m currently back in school with the hopes of being a principal or special education director one day. We have two dogs—Izzy and Archie. I’m most excited to be back at a place where I have the support needed to become a better educator. My year is going to be great, I can already tell! I have great students and even better teachers around me.”
Let’s all give a warm Blue Devil welcome to our new faculty!

Water Valley High School cheerleaders ride in the back of a pickup truck on their way to cheer stations along the Watermelon Carnival 3K race route early Saturday morning.
Our football team is also welcoming a new face. Coach Matthew Turner is the new offensive line coach, bringing 26 years of classroom and coaching experience to Water Valley High School. We’re excited to see the difference he’ll make on and off the field.
I checked in with a few students to hear how their first day of school went. Natalie Hernandez said, “It was good. All of my classes are fun; they all have most of my friends in them. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the year turns out.” Levi Bryant also shared his thoughts about summer break: “It wasn’t packed with a lot of things to do, but it was a nice break from school before starting my last year.”
Two Water Valley High School students had big moments at the Watermelon Carnival’s Music Fest. Miss Teenage Ryley Hill said, “It was an overwhelming feeling, but once I walked out on stage I felt fine. Seeing my family in the crowd calmed my nerves. Being crowned was very exciting—but I was also a little nervous!”
Alexia Horton performed with her brother, RJ Horton, during Music Fest. “Though we did have some minor issues with music and cues, it all worked out! Now with the question of how it felt singing with my brother, to answer that it felt great! I always love singing with anybody in my family or even my friends. Singing with my brother, It felt like I’d won the lottery,” said Alexia.
The cheerleaders have already been active this school year. On Friday, they cheered for elementary students to help build excitement for the new year. They also showed up for the 3K race during the Watermelon Carnival, spraying runners with water guns and cheering as they crossed the finish line.
Chyanne Winters described the experience: “The race had so many people. Everyone smiled when they saw our water guns—especially the little kids! On their way back, we handed out high fives, and people who had been walking suddenly picked up the pace with big smiles on their faces!”
That wraps up the first short week of school! Next week will bring even more excitement with the first volleyball games of the season. Come out and show your support for our Lady Blue Devils on Tuesday and Thursday!
Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll stay tuned for more updates next week Inside the Blue and White!
