It’s another week for Inside the Blue and White and such a busy week for the students and teachers. The seniors are quickly marking things off their lists. We took our senior portrait photos Wednesday. Last first day — CHECK. Senior portraits — CHECK. After senior portraits, some had brunch at IHOP, then some went home.
The Lady Devil volleyball team was busy last week! On Tuesday, we faced Grenada at home and, after a hard fight, the girls came up short. It was a very close game. On Thursday, we played Charleston, bringing home the win in three sets. Our junior varsity team also won in three sets. This JV bunch has grown so much since they first touched a volleyball, and I’m so proud of them! The students came out and supported the girls, and some came because they needed extra credit.

Senior girls dressed for senior portraits mark another milestone on their senior year checklist — “Last First Day” and now portraits, both checked off the list.
Our setter, Natalie Hernandez, suffered a minor injury during the summer, but she was cleared for play on Thursday.
A new golf season is upon us. Their first match is August 14 at the Yalobusha Country Club.
“I am most excited about two major things. The first is that we have Allen Paysinger back this year, who made it to state two years ago but was out due to injury last season,” reported Coach Steve Lindsey. “Having him back with Levi Bryant should give us two good seasoned vets to help out our younger players. Lucian Lindsey and Shane French should be much improved from last season, and with the addition of Bowen West (transfer from Delta Academy), we should have a pretty salty boys team,” Lindsey added.
On the girls team, Coach Lindsey shared that Fisher Camp joined the team last year and is progressing nicely.
“So I am very optimistic about our potential this year. The second exciting thing is on the girls’ side of the course. This year we will return Autumn Webb, Bayleigh Camp, and Amelia Thomas. Last season was the first year Bayleigh and Amelia had swung a club, so I am excited to see their progress now that they have a year under their belts.”
Go support your Blue Devils as they take on Grenada at the YCC!
Last week also marked the first official week of school, so I asked a couple students how their week went.
Edee Henderson responded, “My first week of school was stressful yet enjoyable. I enjoy getting back into the rhythm with my friends. I was named editor of the yearbook staff, and I have very fun and exciting ideas to involve students. Being in the yearbook staff is super fun and engaging. I love getting to work with my advisor, Mrs. (Anna) Koshenina, and getting to bring mine and my staff’s ideas to life.”
I also asked Addy Douglas about her week.
“I enjoyed coming back from summer break to learn all about my teachers! I’m excited to continue to learn from a new set of teachers and can’t wait for the many opportunities. I really loved coming back and seeing all of my friends in my classes and being able to watch our Lady Devils volleyball team grow as athletes as well as young women,” Addy replied.
Football season is coming upon us fast! Meet the Blue Devils is the 22nd — make sure you come out and show your support for our Blue Devils. The first kickoff is on the 29th! The boys have been busy with practice during the summer and after school.
I asked the quarterback, Tre Adams, what he is most looking forward to seeing happen this season as a quarterback.
“This year I am looking towards leading the team to a championship. The team we have has a lot of potential and talent,” Adams said. “If we keep our head in the game, I believe we will win a lot of games this year.”
I also asked wide receiver/safety Alijah Pegues the same thing.
“I know the season will play out with us holding our heads high, seeing all our hard work paying off,” Pegues said. “I can see us making a deep playoff run. We just got to want it and fight for it. We have been working hard and fighting through adversity and letting all the hate fill us up and make us hungry, so of course we are coming for revenge and domination all season — starting with Independence. I look forward to doing my job and being consistent and excelling at my position, whether it’s running a route or blocking for one of my guys. And celebrating in the end zone all season!”
Thank you for reading this week’s column, Inside the Blue and White. We will have a full week of volleyball and the first golf match of the season to share in the next edition. See ya next week!
