Bruce To Host Book Signing For National Grief Awareness Day

Mary Bruce, author and motivational speaker, holds a copy of her book Widowhood: A Changed Perspective on Loss. She will host a book signing and discussion on Saturday, Aug. 30, at The Magnolia Coffee Co. in Water Valley as part of National Grief Awareness Day.

Saturday, August 30, will mark the eleventh observance of National Grief Awareness Day. To honor the occasion, Mary Bruce—author, motivational speaker, and widow of 25 years—will host a book signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Magnolia Coffee Co., 428 Main Street, Water Valley. Bruce will offer a free copy of her book, Widowhood: A Changed Perspective on Loss, to widows who attend. The event will include a short reading, group discussion, and an open question-and-answer session.

A registered nurse for more than 50 years, Bruce has also worked with several nonprofit organizations. She emphasizes that while grief is universal, many widows become “stuck” in deep sorrow, which can be overwhelming. “Although we all handle stress differently, the stress of loss can be redirected from debilitating sorrow into productivity,” Bruce said.

She encourages widows to view their loss as a calling to leadership, hoping to see widows in every community connect and form support groups for those newly facing loss.

National Grief Awareness Day was founded by Angie Cartwright, an activist and public speaker who drew on her own life experiences to highlight the lack of grief education in society. The annual observance continues to grow nationwide, serving as a reminder that open conversations about grief can help break down the stigma of loss and encourage healing in families, churches, and communities.

Bruce said she hopes the Water Valley event will provide comfort, fellowship, and a renewed sense of purpose for anyone walking through alone.
