Hey! Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the column and it has been a slightly busy, plus boring week — nothing much happened!
Once again, our Lady Blue Devils volleyball team had a busy week. At Charleston, JV and Varsity both took an easy win. The Varsity girls were on fire with serving! After the game we ate McDonald’s in a gas station. Tuesday we fought hard, but came up short against South Panola. It was a very good game, and also very close. Taking another win back home, we played Leflore and swept them in all three sets. We all played strong and consistent with our hitting, passing, and serving. All the girls served very well, winning us the majority of the points for the game. Next week we play Winona, Leflore, and our WV Jamboree — all at home! Make sure you come and support us girls!
The first high school golf tournament was at Yalobusha Country Club. I asked Levi Bryant if he was ready for his last first match. He answered, “I feel ready for the season and this first tournament, but also ready to see how well the entire team does. The entire team is very naturally talented and I can’t wait to see how each player progresses in their own game over the season.”
I also asked Coach Steve Lindsey, who said, “The first match is always fun, but my goal for the team is to not worry about winning or losing but to start learning how to score as a team. This is very different than trying to reach your own personal best score that day.”
They faced off against Grenada in a nine-hole match, with the boys missing victory by only four strokes and the girls by seven strokes. Both girls, Baleigh Camp and Amelia Thomas, shot a 61 individually. For the boys, the top three scorers were Bowen West with a 40, Allen Paysinger with a 41, and Levi Bryant with a 43. The players all agreed they were excited to kick start the season and are prepared to get those scores even lower as the year progresses! They will golf against Holka at the Okolona Country Club on Tuesday, then South Panola at Mallard Point on Thursday!
Some fundraisers kicked off this week! Beta Club is selling J & J candles for $12! You might know these candles by their bright colors in fruit jars and funny names like “Monkey Butt!” Student Council is selling small classic-flavor cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes for $7 each. Volleyball and Color Guard are also doing a calendar fundraiser, which consists of picking a “date” and giving that amount of money to the program. Please consider helping out our students — it will be greatly appreciated!
Homecoming court candidates will begin campaigning for homecoming court positions! Candidates can create posters and signs, but cannot distribute treats or favors. The homecoming theme is still unknown!
Football is taking off, and that means the marching band is too! The band has had amazing seasons, especially last year when they earning the All-Superior rating for the first time in many years! They have been working so hard and staying consistent! Color guard has been getting at it as well.
“We did fundamentals such as learning both our first and second songs’ choreography,” stated band member Megan Willingham. “We have stand tunes that we perform in the stands. Most importantly, we worked on being in sync with each other and putting our moves to the music. We marched our sets and learned to get to our spot on time. Color guard is basically the show. The band plays the music, but we, the color guard, put on the show. We are the visual representation.”
Thank you for reading this week’s column of Inside the Blue and White! I appreciate you for reading, and I’ll see ya next week with more exciting news and updates on what’s happening at Water Valley High School!
