WATER VALLEY – Qualifying closed Thursday, Aug. 21, for school board elections in Yalobusha County, with only one candidate filing in each of the two positions up for election.
In the Water Valley School District, Shannon Crow submitted qualifying papers for the Position Four seat. In the Coffeeville School District, incumbent Linda Bland qualified for re-election to Position Four. The Yalobusha County Election Commission will review the paperwork to ensure qualifications are met.
Because only one candidate qualified in each district, neither race will appear on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.
In Water Valley, Position Four is currently held by Kathryn York, who did not seek re-election.
Each school district is divided into five geographic subdistricts, with one trustee elected from each subdistrict to serve a staggered five-year term. Trustees help set policy, adopt budgets, and oversee the superintendent, while also shaping curriculum standards and making decisions that directly impact student programs and staffing.
To qualify, candidates must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of the subdistrict they seek to represent. Crow and Bland will start their five-year terms on Jan. 1.
