Barbara Theodore, R.N. at Yalobusha General Hospital, checked Charles Melton’s pulse as he is being admitted. Mr. Melton was the 20,000th patient admitted to the hospital.
10 Years Ago, October 1, 2015 – Dozens of motorcycles were part of the lengthy funeral procession for Johnny Holloway Monday morning. Holloway passed away Sept. 23 at the age of 60. Holloway helped found Dream Riders Biking for Children and was an avid motorcyclist. He was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery after the procession left Seven Oaks Funeral Home, traveled up the bypass and back through town on Central and Main streets before turning on Hwy. 32 and coming up CR 100 to Blackmur.
20 Years—September 29, 2005 – Playing the title character, Robin Hood, in the Missoula Children’s Theatre production was Jacob King. Other featured performers were: Chandler Stone as Maid Marion; Danielle Tidwell as Maid Marion’s Maid; Treshon Calahan as the Sheriff of Nottingham; and Jillian Harris as Prince John.
Jason Langdon was in intensive care at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis following a football injury sustained in Friday night’s game.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the Spears Wing at Yalobusha County Nursing Home. Cutting the ribbon was Board President Linda Ingram, with Hospital Administrator Terry Varner and Board Member Brownie Crawford assisting. Many Water Valley Ambassadors, other city and county dignitaries, and citizens were in attendance.
Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputies, Doug Carter, Marvin Horton, Billy Flippin, Jimmy Cofer, and Clyde Holliday, graduated from the first Reserve Lafayette County Law Enforcement Training Academy.
30 Years—September 28, 1995 – A deacon ordination Service would be held at Everdale M.B. Church October 1, 1995, according to Rev. Larry Hervey, pastor.
Listed in the Tomorrow’s Men & Women Column were: Elijah Lawrence Leonard, son of Major Dave and Jody Grass Leonard, and Justin Clayton Gardiner, son of Clayton and Kathy Gardiner. Local grandparents of the Leonard baby are Jack and Charlotte Grass, and grandparents of the Gardiner baby are Charles and Nellie Gardiner.
The WVHS Problem Solving Team participated in the International Competition. Members of the team, traveling to Providence, Rhode Island for the competition, were Lailah Bruce, James Carr, Karla Hamilton, and Alison Willingham.
40 Years—October 3, 1985 – Crowned 1985 WVHS Homecoming Queen was Sandy Loper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Loper. Maids were: Elizabeth Shields, Gloria Joy, and Sandra Benson, seniors; Amy Fernandez and Tisha Covington, juniors; Dawn Dickey and Sandy Tyler, sophomores.
Long time Water Valley grocery store, Jones Supermarket, was sold to the Foodway Company. Owner Jimmie Jones stated that he stayed in the grocery business as long as he could and had enjoyed every minute of it.
Water Valley notched their first victory of the 1985 season last Friday, as they out lasted North Panola, 14–8. An expectant homecoming crowd found itself with cause for concern as the home team played three quarters of self-destruct football before pulling the game out.
50 Years—October 2, 1975 – The Blue Devils defeated the Coffeeville Pirates, 24-14, in a fast paced contest Friday night.
Mayor Watson Hunt signed a proclamation stating that Water Valley will join in the celebration of National Grass-Belt Beef Week. Looking on were County Agent Doyle Varner, Danny Ross Ingram and Leroy Edwards, members of the Cattlemen’s Association.
A group of citizens representing various areas that would be affected by an annexation plan being discussed by the city came before the Board of Aldermen. Mayor L.C. Stewart said that the administration feels that an annexation program is necessary for the city’s progress.
“We want additional industry,” Stewart said, and implied that the recognized population of a community affected the thinking of industrialists.
60 Years—September 30, 1965 – Rev. G. H. Surrette has been named Assistant Professor of Bible at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri.
Alice Faye Hayles will marry Dempsey Brooks (Butch) Chittom on November 21.
70 Years—September 29, 1955 – Cadet officers of the Air Force ROTC Wing at Mississippi State College for 1955-56 were announced this week. Cadet officers of the various squadrons included 1st Lt. Oliver W. Johnson, Jr. of Water Valley who will serve as Flight Commander of Squadron H.
80 Years—September 6, 1945 — A statement of receipts printed in this issue of the Herald showed that the Water Valley Electric Department has a surplus of $10,132.42. The gross revenue of the department was $45,675.78.
Herald Editor Ed Shearer in his weekly column: “Water Valley had some passenger trains, but for a short time. Following a wreck north of Memphis, trains were routed from Grenada through Water Valley. The Panama Limited Wednesday night competed with a Pet Show at the Grand Theatre in interest of Water Valley people and did not fare so badly in the competition. Probably 25 automobiles and a hundred or more people were at the station Wednesday night at 9:30 when the Panama Limited stopped in Water Valley for about 10 minutes.”
