Voters Elect To Keep Beat System In 2015 Referendum

10 Years Ago, Nov. 5, 2015 – Sixty percent of the voters casting a ballot voted against the unit system in Tuesday’s General Election. The unofficial vote tally was completed just before 9 p.m. as Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney read the numbers in the Water Valley courthouse. The unit vote did not carry a single precinct in the county, with 44.15 percent of the county’s registered voters participating in the election. The vote count was 1,361 for the unit system and 1971 against the unit system.

20 Years—November 3, 2005 – Lauren Burgess was crowned homecoming queen during the football game Friday night. Senior maids were Kelsey Reed, Austin Shaw, and Deana Harmon; Whitney Hodge was the junior maid; the sophomore maid was Steffi River; and Marlie Craven was the freshman maid.

BorgWarner cut seven salaried positions due to declining sales by customers, General Motors, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler.

30 Years—November 2, 1995 – Eupora fell to the determined Blue Devils, 25-14, and now Water Valley is playoff bound.

Donna and Norris Harding were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary November 12 with a reception at the Lions Club Depot Building.

40 Years—November 7, 1985 – The Blue Devils lost a close game to the Coldwater Cougars, 14-6.

Yalobusha County Agent Doyle Varner was elected secretary-treasurer of the Mississippi Association of County Agricultural Agents for 1986.

Glen Zediker was High Overall Shooter and John Easley was the Second Place Shooter in the Area NRA Tournament.

Among wrestlers on the bill at the Water Valley High School wrestling match was Jerry “The King” Lawler, brother of the late Larry Lawler.

Water Valley native, Charles Appleton, was promoted to Chief Dispatcher at its Houston Headquarters by Columbia Gulf Gas Transmission Co.

50 Years—November 6, 1975 – Yalobusha County Bar Association and officers of the Chancery Court hosted a dinner, honoring Gerald Harris, Chancery Clerk, retiring with 20 years service, and Deputy Chancery Clerk, Doris Cox, retiring with 12 years of service. Members of the Bar were Murray Williams, John Throop, and Ben Horan, attorneys, and Judge Kermit Cofer.

Majorettes for the WVHS Band were Suzanne Davis, Lori Hardy, Cheryl Odom, and Tracey Williamson.
Chancery Clerk Elect Bobby Clark and Rev. Buford Sellers displayed a Bicentennial Flag presented to the

Town of Oakland at their Bicentennial Recognition Ceremony.
A third generation cattleman, seven-year-old Julie Ingram, continues the family tradition in the cattle industry.

60 Years—November 4, 1965 – A record crowd was expected to see the Blue Devils and the Senatobia Warriors vie for the Chickasaw Conference Championship.

City Marshall “Freck” Mitchell warned against speeding in the city.

The Water Valley Board of Aldermen agreed to extend the City Limits.

The Davidson Tigers Basketball Team released their schedule. Team members returning were Captain Joe Willie Bailey, William Bland, Jack Cooke, Sidney Joseph, George Lawrence, Sylvester Cooke, and Leon Laster.

70 Years—November 3, 1955 – Sonny Sartor crowned ‘Queen Sue McCullar during the Pee Wee Homecoming Ceremony. Maids were Barbara McCulley, Kay Wilbourn, Betty Miller and Ann Brown. The Pee Wee Team defeated Oakland, 20-0.

Ole Miss Chancellor J. D. Williams spoke with Yalobusha County Repre- sentative Joe Bailey of Coffeeville who was a guest on the University Campus. Yalobusha students Elsie White of Water Valley and John Stone of Coffeeville, also visited with Rep. Bailey.

In a magazine drive at Water Valley High School winners were Betty Barron, first, Danny Ross Ingram, second, and Robert Turnage, third.
