Chamber Report
By Jessie Gurner
As soon as the tinsel gets packed away and the last ornament goes back in the box, the Chamber starts looking ahead. Because once Christmas is done, it doesn’t take long before our thoughts turn from Santa to watermelons.
Even though we’re only just stepping into 2026, planning is already underway for the Watermelon Carnival, which will be held this year on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1. And for anyone who happens to be counting, this year’s celebration will mark the 56th Watermelon Carnival.
It might sound early, but anyone who’s ever been involved in pulling off this big hometown weekend knows better. Things don’t magically come together on their own. They take time, conversations, calendars, plans, and more than a few “let’s make a note of that” moments.
For the Chamber, the Watermelon Carnival isn’t just an event. It’s one of those weekends that reminds us why we do what we do. It brings people back home. It introduces new faces to Water Valley. It fills Main Street, supports our local businesses, and gives all of us a reason to slow down and enjoy being part of this place.
Right now, we’re already talking through the details. What worked well last year. What we can improve. How to make sure the weekend feels welcoming, fun, and unmistakably Water Valley. We’re thinking about vendors, music, logistics, and all the behind-the-scenes pieces that most people never see but definitely feel.
And yes, even this early in the year, we’re already wondering about the big question that always comes up sooner or later. Who’s going to grow the largest watermelon this year? Somewhere out there, seeds have been ordered, garden spots measured, and someone is quietly convinced that this is the year they take the title. Around here, that contest is serious business. It’s part friendly competition, part local legend, and part bragging rights that last well beyond the summer. We love watching the weigh-in, hearing the good-natured debates, and seeing just how big a watermelon can get when patience, skill, and a little Water Valley determination are involved.
This kind of planning is at the heart of the Chamber’s work. We’re always looking ahead, not just to the next event, but to how we can support our businesses and strengthen our community along the way. The Watermelon Carnival does both, and that’s a big part of why it matters so much.
A new year has a way of making everything feel possible, and 2026 is already shaping up to be a good one. While summer may feel far off right now, it has a habit of sneaking up on us. Before we know it, Carnival time will be here, and Water Valley will be getting ready for one of its favorite weekends.
So go ahead and pencil it in now. We’ll be sharing more details as plans take shape in the months ahead, and we look forward to another Watermelon Carnival that feels just like home.
Until then, know that the Chamber is already busy behind the scenes, doing what we do best, planning ahead, bringing people together, and keeping Water Valley moving forward, one watermelon at a time.
