Young outdoors enthusiasts will have a chance to spend a day fishing, learning and exploring nature during the upcoming F.I.S.H. Camp hosted by the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery and the National Park Service.
The free camp is planned June 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center and is open to youth ages 10-15.
F.I.S.H., which stands for “Fun, Interesting, Surprising and Hands-On,” will include a variety of outdoor and educational activities throughout the day. Campers will learn how to identify different kinds of fish, practice water safety skills and tour the hatchery’s Visitor Education Center. Participants will also have an opportunity to go catfish fishing in the hatchery pond.
A National Park Service ranger will also be part of the program, teaching campers about the Junior Angler Program and how to earn a National Park Service Junior Angler Badge.
Organizers said all fishing equipment and bait will be provided. Youth who complete the activities during the camp will also receive giveaways and have the opportunity to earn their badge.
The program is free, but advance registration is required. Families may register by calling the Visitor Education Center at 662-563-8068 or by emailing Emily-Jo.Wiggins@wfp.ms.gov.
The Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center is located off Interstate 55 at Exit 233. Organizers said they hope the camp encourages young people to enjoy the outdoors, learn about conservation and develop an interest in fishing.
