City Police Handle Routine Calls During January

WATER VALLEY – Police have charged one man following a family dispute at an apartment in Rolling Hills on Jan. 11.

Water Valley Police Chief Mike King reported Earnest Paten Sr. was charged with felony aggravated assault after he allegedly hit his wife in the head with a wooden coffee table.  The victim was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi  where she was treated and released.

Earnest Paten Jr. also faces violation of a city ordinance, discharging a firearm, after he fired handgun in the air after his father fled from the apartment following the altercation.

Paten Sr. was booked in the Yalobusha County Jail. He posted a $7,500 bond and was released on Jan. 17.

Other cases investigated by Water Valley officers in January include:

• Took a report of a counterfeit $10 bill at Sprint Mart. Officers worked to trace the origin of the phony bill.

• Responded to two reports of death by natural causes – one at Blackmur Drive on Jan. 13 and the second at Boyd Street on Jan. 12.

• Investigated a burglary and breaking and entering at an apartment at Rolling Hills on Jan. 12. Chief King reported a PlayStation 3 game console and a Turtles game was reported stolen .

• Investigated a report of a broken window at Rolling Hills. King reported a window had two holes in it, possibly from a pellet gun or rock. 

• Made an arrest for DUI, first offense, on Jan. 8 at the intersection of East Wood Street and Stephens Street. The driver was also cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license. 

• Made an arrest for DUI, first offense, on Jan. 25. The incident occurred on Goode Street and the driver was also cited with driving under a suspended license, improper equipment and no proof of liability insurance.

• Took a report of forged checks on Jan. 19 after a complainant reported someone had stolen her check book and wrote checks on the account.

• Took a report on Jan. 19 of forged checks after the complainant reported someone was writing checks on her son. 

• Took a report of felony credit card fraud after the complainant reported her daughter had taken her debit card and made a cash withdrawal from an ATM. According to the police report, the card was inside the complainant’s billfold, which was kept under her pillow.

• Made an arrest for contempt of court and providing false identifying information on New Year’s Day on South Main Street.

• Made an arrest for simple assault and misdemeanor possession of marijuana at 101 Prospect Drive on Jan. 6.

• Took a report of trespassing on Thornton Street on Jan. 25.

• Made an arrest for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and disturbing the peace at 909 North Main Street on Jan. 7.

• Made an arrest for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia at the intersection of East Wood and Stephens Street.

• Performed a welfare check on West Lee Street on Jan. 24.

• Worked six automobile accidents.

• Made a misdemeanor arrest for contempt of court on Jan. 13.

• Issued a citation for a privilege tax violation.

• Cited a driver on Jan. 13 for improper passing, driving on the wrong side of the road, reckless driving and speeding.

• Cited a driver for driving under suspension and no proof of liability insurance on Jan. 11 at Perkins Cove.

• Made a misdemeanor arrest for simple assault at Rolling Hills Apt. RH 95 on Jan. 12.

• Made an arrest for misdemeanor public drunk on Jan. 12 on Panola Street.

• Took a report of found property at 909 North Main Street on Jan. 11.

• Took a report of found property at Central Street park on Jan. 5.

• Took a report of petit larceny at Sonic on Jan. 18.

• Took a report of abuse of a vulnerable adult on Jan. 15.

• Made an arrest for resisting arrest on Eckford Street on Jan. 16.
