WATER VALLEY – Head Coach Larry Taylor has his Blue Devils squad on a roll after they lost their first two games of the season. Water Valley has won three straight, with big wins over Lewisburg, Winona, and Bruce.

The 2017-2018 season kicked off back in early November, as Water Valley hosted Bruce. The Blue Devils were defeated 79-69, however the team was missing a couple of key players as the Water Valley football team was still in the thick of the playoffs.

With the full squad back together, Water Valley and Coach Taylor traveled to Charleston to take on the always athletic Tigers. The Blue Devils looked good in their first game with everyone back, but came up just short falling to Charleston by a score of 71-60. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 0-2 on the season.

Water Valley showed a glimpse of their potential against Lewisburg on November 17, defeating the Class 5A Patriots 59-47. The big win was the first of many for what looks to be Coach Taylor’s best squad since taking the job at Water Valley in 2014.

The Blue Devils looked even more impressive a couple days later when they hosted the Winona Tigers, taking a 38-14 lead with them into the locker room at halftime. Water Valley would go on to defeat the Tigers by a score of 51-23, the win improved the Blue Devils to 2-2 on the season.

Water Valley was able to avenge their opening night loss to Bruce on December 1st, as they defeated the Trojans 74-55, in the Blue Devils best offensive performance so far this season. The win moved the team to 3-2 on the season.

They’ll be back in action Thursday night, as they make the short trip to Coffeeville to play the Grenada Chargers in the Coffeeville Tournament at 5:30. It’ll be a measuring stick game for the Blue Devils, facing another 5A squad in Grenada.

Region play starts later this month.
