HOLLY SPRINGS – The Blue Devils (6-1) traveled to Holly Springs last week to take on the Hawks (5-2) in their first division game of the season. Looking to get back on track after suffering their first loss of the season against Winona, the Blue Devils bounced back with a dominating win from the first whistle to the last en route to a convincing 43-0 victory over a much-improved Holly Springs team.

The Hawks came into the contest averaging 40 points per game, but were shut out as the Blue Devils defense had an outstanding performance, holding the home team scoreless.

Water Valley’s offense sputtered early but found its form midway through the second and didn’t look back. Water Valley kicked off the scoring with a defensive score, as Keldric McIntosh found the endzone on a five-yard interception return giving the Blue Devils an early 7-0 lead.

The Blue Devils would strike again on their first drive of the second quarter, as Blayne Clark connected with Bud Tolbert on a 29-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 14-0. Clark and Tolbert would connect again right before the half, this time on a 53-yard strike to give Water Valley a 21-0 lead heading into the half.

Freshman Dre McCray had a big impact at tailback against the Hawks as Tay Rucker is still recovering from an injury. McCray scored on a 15-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Water Valley would score again on the next drive, as Paris Adams found the endzone on a one-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 35-0. The Blue Devils final touchdown would come early in the fourth quarter as Jacob Truss punched it in from one yard out. The Water Valley defense would strike again however, forcing a safety to make the score 43-0 late in the contest.

The win improved Water Valley to (6-1) on the season and (1-0) in Region 2-3A. The Blue Devils will continue division play this week, hosting M.S. Palmer at Bobby Clark Field.
