COFFEEVILLE –  The Water Valley Blue Devils faced some tough competition in the Coffeeville basketball tournament last weekend, taking on Grenada, Charleston, and Coffeeville.

The Blue Devils continued their impressive play, but struggled to close out in all three games falling by less than five points in the matchups. The losses dropped Coach Taylor’s Blue Devils to (3-5) early in the season.

In the first game of the tourney, Water Valley carried a 37-36 lead into the half against the 5A Grenada Chargers. Grenada came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, outscoring the Blue Devils 24-14 to take a nine-point lead into the final quarter. Grenada held off a late Blue Devil rally to earn the 75-70 victory.

In the second contest of the tournament, Water Valley took on former division rival Charleston. Just like the first contest, the Blue Devils took a 27-25 lead to the half over the Tigers. Charleston made a couple more shots in the second half to earn the 58-53 win over Water Valley.

The Blue Devils finished the tournament by facing the home standing Coffeeville Pirates. It was an explosive game with both teams scoring near their season high. Water Valley challenged Coffeeville all the way to the end, falling by a final score of 79-78.

Water Valley will be back in action on Friday night as they host the North Panola Cougars for their first division contest of the season.
