Blue Devils’ Close Game Struggles Continue After Narrow Losses

CHARLESTON/WATER VALLEY – Coach Larry Taylor’s Blue Devil squad lost all three games in the Coffeeville Tournament two weeks ago by a combined 11 points. Water Valley started strong all season but the team has struggled closing the games out to come away with the victories.

The Blue Devils (3-7, 0-1 Region 2-3A) suffered two similar defeats this past week, falling to Charleston and North Panola by a respective two and one-point margin.

The Blue Devils traveled to Charleston on December 12th to take on the Tigers. Charleston came out strong, taking a 30-23 lead into the half over Water Valley. A strong third quarter from the Blue Devils would give them a 47-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

Charleston made a couple more shots in the 4th quarter to earn the 65-63 victory over Water Valley. The Blue Devils loss was their 4th straight, and also the 4th straight by less than five points.

Following the heartbreaker to Charleston, Water Valley came back home to host the North Panola Cougars on Dec. 15 for their first division contest of the season.

Just like the previous five contests, this one came down to the final seconds. Water Valley gave the talented Cougars all they could handle falling by a final score of 59-58. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to (3-7) on the season and (0-1) in Region 2-3A play.

The Blue Devils have a team that is capable of making a good run in the 3A Playoffs if they can start winning the close games.

With three wins and five losses by a combined 14 points, the team has looked strong at times this season and looks to be Coach Taylor’s most talented team since taking over the program in 2014.

The team will be back in action on Thursday afternoon as they host the Lewisburg Patriots, Water Valley defeated Lewisburg 59-47 on Nov. 17.

Lady Devils Look Better

The Lady Devils hosted the North Panola Lady Cougars on Dec. 15 in their first division contest on the young season.

The Lady Devils (1-4) got off to a better start in this matchup than they have had in previous games this season, only trailing at the half by a score of 32-24. However, North Panola used a big third quarter to pull away en route to the 57-35 victory.

The loss dropped Water Valley to (1-5, 0-1 Region 3-2A) on the season. The Lady Devils will be back in action Thursday afternoon as they host the Lewisburg Lady Patriots.
