WATER VALLEY – The Blue Devils hosted their rivals from a few miles south, the Coffeeville Pirates, last Saturday night. This was the first contest for both squads in over a week after a long break from school due to the snow and icy road conditions.
This game played out eerily similar to the first matchup between these rivals in early December, with Water Valley holding a lead late in the second half with a chance to get a big, confidence boosting win. However, the Blue Devils were unable to hold off a late comeback from the Pirates, falling by a final score of 72-65.
Water Valley used a big third quarter to take the late lead against Coffeeville. The 24-point period gave the Blue Devils a 54-51 lead over the Pirates, heading into the final quarter.
Much like the first matchup, Coffeeville finished strong outscoring Water Valley 21-11 in the final quarter to earn the 72-65 win over their county rivals.
The loss dropped Water Valley to (4-12, 0-2 Region 2-3A) on the season. The Blue Devils have a big stretch of division games coming up, with a chance to get on a roll before the division tournament next month.
The action continues Friday night as they host the Independence Wildcats at approximately 7:30 p.m. in a big division matchup.
The Lady Devils will also be back in action on Friday night at 6 p.m. as they host the Independence Lady Wildcats.
