Blue Devils Come Up Short Against 4A Powers

After five games, Ty Varner leads the Blue Devils with a .375 batting average.

PONTOTOC- The Water Valley Blue Devils looked to continue their quick start as they traveled to Pontotoc to play in the Pontotoc Tournament last weekend. The Blue Devils faced off against two 4A powers, with the Ripley Tigers (2-0) and the host Pontotoc Warriors (5-0). 

Coming into the tournament, Water Valley was (2-1), with impressive wins against New Albany and South Panola, along with an extra inning loss to Calhoun City.

The Blue Devils struggled against the tough competition, falling to Ripley by a final score of 15-2 and Pontotoc 11-3. The two losses dropped Water Valley to (2-3) on the young season. 

After five games, Ty Varner leads the Blue Devils with a .375 batting average, Grant Burress has the team lead in RBIs with four. Blayne Clark and Gavin Darby both have one win on the mound for the Blue Devils, as they look to be the top two pitchers on the staff. Dre McCray and Chapel Hyde will also be a couple of key guys that take the mound for Water Valley this season. 

Water Valley will be back in action on Friday night, as they travel to Grenada to take on the Grenada Chargers (2-2). The junior varsity game will start at 4 p.m. , with the varsity game following at 6 p.m.
