WATER VALLEY- The Blue Devils (8-8, 3-1) clinched Region 2-3A last week after splitting their series with the Independence Wildcats (6-4, 2-1). The Blue Devils lost the first matchup in a low scoring 2-1 game. However, the Blue Devils left no doubt in game two, defeating the Wildcats 8-2.
Water Valley received big performances from seniors Gavin Darby and Ty Varner, with three hits and two hits respectively. Grant Burress also had two hits for the Blue Devils, and led the team with three RBIs in the division clinching win.
Dre McCray and Blayne Clark pitched 3.1 and 3.2 innings respectively, combining to hold the Wildcats to two runs on five hits, in the 8-2 victory.
The 2018 Region 2-3A crown gives the Blue Devils five division titles in the last six years.
With division play wrapped up, Water Valley has three games left before the playoffs begin.
The Blue Devils were back in action at presstime Tuesday, hosting West Union. Their next game is Friday night, as they host the Kirk Academy Raiders with JV at 5 and Varsity following at 7 p.m. The game is also senior recognition night.
