WATER VALLEY – The Blue Devil baseball team (10-8) (3-1) finished the regular season with dominant wins over West Union and Kirk Academy and will now await to see who they’ll face in the first round of the MHSAA 3A playoffs.
In the 6-2 victory over West Union (11-9), the Blue Devils scored six runs to answer West Union’s two early runs.
Grant Burress and Dre McCray led the Blue Devils with three hits each. Chapel Hyde earned the win on the mound for the Blue Devils, pitching 5.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Blayne Clark came in to earn the save, pitching the final 1.2 innings and not allowing a hit.
Following the West Union win, Water Valley took on the Kirk Academy Raiders. The Blue Devils pounced on the Raiders, scoring 14 runs in four innings to earn the dominant victory.
Ty Varner led the Blue Devils with four hits, McCray added three hits. Damian Willingham led the Blue Devils with three RBIs, followed by Varner with two RBIs for Water Valley.
Gavin Darby earned the win for Water Valley, pitching four scoreless innings. McCray earned the save, pitching one scoreless inning.
The two wins improved the Blue Devils to (10-8) on the season. Water Valley will be back in action next week as the playoffs begin and they will learn who their opponent is later this week.
