Blue Devils Remain Perfect In Region Play

Grant Burress pushes ahead for extra yards in Friday’s homecoming win over MS Palmer.

WATER VALLEY – The Blue Devils (7-1, 2-0) hosted the M.S. Palmer Dragons (2-4, 1-1) for a Region 2-3A contest and homecoming last Friday night. The Blue Devils jumped on the Dragons early and didn’t look back, en-route to a big 48-8 win to remain undefeated in region play.

Water Valley entered the week ranked number five in the weekly Mississippi High School A.P. Poll, marking the first time the team has cracked the poll’s top five.

The Blue Devils scored first as Tay Rucker found the endzone on a one-yard rushing touchdown setup by a nice punt return from Bud Tolbert. Water Valley would strike again on their very next drive, as Rucker ran it in from five yards out to put Water Valley up 13-0.

Dre McCray would extend the Blue Devils lead to 20-0 on the next drive, scoring on a one-yard rushing touchdown with 9:17 left in the second quarter. The Water Valley defense would get involved in the scoring for the second straight week, scoring on another interception return touchdown to put the Blue Devils up 27-0.

Water Valley would score two more times before the half, with a Jacob Truss one-yard rushing touchdown and Blayne Clark connecting with Tolbert on an 11-yard touchdown pass to put Water Valley up 41-0 heading into the half.

The second half went by rather quickly, with the officials starting a running clock. Both teams would score once in the half, making the final score 48-8.

Water Valley will continue region play this week, traveling to Clarksdale to take on Coahoma A.H.S. (4-4, 0-2). The Blue Devils defeated the Tigers 41-6 last season.
