Letter To The Editor – July 31, 2008

Dear Editor,

Southern Living opened an idea house in Taylor the last of June. It is open for tours Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The home will be open until October 18. Admission fee is $5. Attendance has been good, with many people driving long distances to attend. The house is staffed with a house manager and volunteers. At least two volunteers are needed at all times.

The Oxford Medical Ministries receives $2 from each $5 entrance fee. This ministry serves the working uninsured in Lafayette and Yalobusha Counties. Their patient’s income must be below 200 percent of the federal poverty level and they also must meet other requirements. Once they are enrolled they are provided their medical visits and medications free.

The ministry was chosen by Southern Living, with the understanding that Oxford Medical Ministries would provide volunteers. RSVP, a professional volunteer organization in Oxford, was asked to recruit and schedule the workers.

The reason for my letter is to ask for more help. Working there is fun and you meet very interesting people. Most shifts are three hours, either 11-2, or 2-5. If you think you would be interested in volunteering for a shift call RSVP at (662) 232-2773. Volunteers, who are 55 years or older and join the Oxford Medical Ministries, may be paid mileage if they desire.

If I can answer any questions, call me at 473-1170.

  /s/ Julia Taylor
