Memphis Woman Killed In I-55 Wreck

By David Howell

OAKLAND – A 33 year-old Memphis woman was killed on I-55 last Wednesday near Oakland after she was struck by an 18-wheeler. Yalobusha County Coroner Ronnie Stark reported Eboney Lewis was pronounced dead on the scene around 8 a.m.

Miller was walking in the right lane on the northbound side of I-55 between Tillatoba and Oakland when the accident occurred, according to Sgt. Joey Miller with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. There were several 911 calls before she was struck reporting a woman walking in the interstate.

Stark reported the victim did not have any identification on her and it took over a day to determine who she was. He said her body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy and fingerprints were used to help with the identification.

“We used the FBI database to determine her identity once we had a match with her fingerprints,” Stark explained.  He also said the database first showed a match with a Jackson woman with a similar name.

“She said it wasn’t her,” Stark said, explaining that he was able to talk to the Jackson woman and rule her out.

Authorities then determined it was a Memphis woman.

“Her photos, height and weight matched up,” Stark explained. “The Mississippi Highway Patrol then got in touch with her sister.”
